India’s NPCI chief: AI will take UPI from 750M to 1 billion daily transactions – covering fraud, credit, and voice onboarding

Category: Fintech Digital Payments

What it is

NPCI MD and CEO Dilip Asbe told TechCrunch at Mumbai Tech Week 2026 that AI
will power every dimension of UPI’s next growth phase – fraud and money-mule
detection, digital-footprint-based credit to users and merchants, and multilingual
voice interfaces to onboard the next 500 million users. NPCI’s AI model FIMI,
launched for payment dispute resolution, already serves over 1 million users.
PhonePe and Google Pay still hold 80%+ market share; a 30% cap per app is set for
December 31, 2026.

Why it Matters for Enterprises

India's payments regulator is embedding AI into public infrastructure - fraud rails,
credit underwriting, and voice access - at population scale. Enterprises building
fintech solutions for India should align product design with this AI-native payments
architecture rather than building parallel systems.
