AI agents can now shop, negotiate, and pay via UPI on their own – Pine Labs launches P3P protocol with zero human authentication

Category: AI Safety • AI Governance • Export Control

What it is

Pine Labs has launched P3P, a payment protocol extending UPI’s mandate
framework to AI agents. The user authorizes a spending mandate once; from
there, the agent browses, selects, negotiates, and pays via UPI with no further
PIN or approval. This follows NPCI and Razorpay’s Agentic Payments via UPI
Reserve Pay (live for Claude users on Zomato, Swiggy, and Zepto) and NPCI’s
push for agent-to-agent compliance workflows. The global agentic commerce
market is projected to hit roughly $65B by 2033.

Why it Matters for Enterprises

UPI is becoming default infrastructure for agentic commerce. Retail, BFSI, and
consumer enterprises should start designing for agent-initiated payments
consent flows, spend limits, and fraud monitoring built for non-human buyers.
