Anthropic opens a research preview letting AI agents safely operate physical machinery

What it is
Anthropic launched the Model Hardware Standard (MHS), a shared specification built with HHMI Janelia Research Campus that lets AI agents discover and operate microscopes, liquid handlers, robotic arms, and other equipment with a programmable interface – cutting integration from days or weeks to hours. Early partners Genentech, HHMI Janelia, and QuEra used MHS to run drug-discovery experiments with real-time error handling, compress imaging work from weeks to a day, and improve quantum-computer laser stabilization from 58% to 99.3%. Tecan and Universal Robots are adding support; Anthropic plans to open-source MHS later, as it did with MCP.
